The Greater Cities Commission, in partnership with the NUW Alliance, is conducting a research internship program with final-year university and TAFE NSW students.
Over the course of eight weeks, selected interns will work in a team-based environment on some of the key issues of our time, such as housing affordability, green space development and equitable infrastructure, looking at ways we can apply city planning to help solve these challenges.
Our interns will gain practical experience working with strategic thinkers across government departments to generate ideas, new skills and solutions that will help shape how we live, work and play in our cities.
About the program
The eight-week transdisciplinary internship program will suit innovative thinkers with unique insights, perspectives and ideas who are interested in improving the planning of our cities.
The program includes workshops, expert presentations, site visits, research advice and feedback, and will culminate in a team-based presentation to senior Commission executives and university partners. Interns will meet weekly to apply their skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking and conflict resolution, working within a supportive team environment.
Interns will develop a possible solution to a city-shaping issue during the eight-week program, generating new perspectives and ideas for the Commission’s consideration.
Interns will receive a stipend of $1000 for their participation over the 8-week period.

The Greater Cities Commission Internship will run for eight weeks commencing from Friday 21 July 2023 to Friday 8 September 2023.
Interns will be provided a stipend of $1000 for their participation in the 8-week program.
No. The GCC Research Internship Program doesn’t offer credit for your participation.
However, you will gain practical experience and apply what you’ve learnt to a real-world challenge in a paid internship program with an independent government agency.
Interns will gain skills in communication, collaboration, conflict resolution and critical thinking throughout the program through working with other interns, strategic planners and senior stakeholders.
The program has been developed to draw upon interns’ insights, skills and knowledge and will involve on-the-job learning, including expert presentations and site visits, alongside receiving research advice and feedback.
There will be networking, skills development and mentoring opportunities to support interns as they complete the program.
The 2023 internship is available to students in their final year of undergraduate study at a university or TAFE within the six cities region. These include:

Yes, to encourage a diverse range of applicants both full-time and part-time students are eligible to apply.
The Internship Program will provide offices for weekly in-person workshops hosted at Level 11, 6 Parramatta Square with preference that students will attend in person, with online facilities provided for those unable to attend every weekly meeting.
