The pandemic prompted concerns about the “death” of the city. However, all the evidence suggests central CBDs will remain essential and cities are preparing for growth to return.

Facing heatwaves, bushfires, floods and storm surges, leading cities are elevating climate resilience into the heart of their strategic planning.

The pandemic has created a new “megaregion” consciousness, in addition to rebalancing economic activity between central and suburban CBDs. Even if people relocated from cities during COVID, on balance there has not been an exodus from the wider city-region.

The pandemic has accelerated the trend towards remote and flexible work, adoption of digital technology and new patterns of mobility around the city.

Every person should have a stake in their city and be included in its vision for the future.
