Media Release | Children and young people with time on their hands these holidays are being encouraged to put their smartphone and tablet skills to good use by helping shape Greater Sydney's future through a new app.

"My Metropolis", launched by the Greater Sydney Commission in partnership with the NSW Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People, encourages younger members of the community to think about what makes an ideal city.

Greater Sydney Commission Chief Commissioner Lucy Turnbull said the free app allows users to plan and build their own digital city using elements such as schools, public transport, cafes, places to work and sporting facilities.

"It's important to provide opportunities for children and young people to share their views on Greater Sydney's future and My Metropolis does this in a way they're comfortable and familiar with," Ms Turnbull said.

"The decisions we make about Greater Sydney today will have the biggest impact on our children and grandchildren, which is why we encourage children and young people to download the app and tell us what they would like to see in their city," she said.

The app will be supported by a survey conducted by the Advocate for Children and Young People.

The Commission will be considering the survey results along with feedback and formal submissions from a range of other organisations that represent young people in Greater Sydney.

My Metropolis is downloadable free of charge on iOS or Android.
